The Revolution Will Be Data-Driven

A keynote for nonprofit and civic sector leaders on how the data revolution was reshaping civil society — the opportunities, the risks, and what organizations need to do to use data without losing sight of the people behind it.

Delivered at ARNOVA (Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action), 2016. As data became central to how civic institutions operated and measured impact, this talk examined what the data revolution meant for nonprofits and public sector organizations specifically. It covered the promise of data-driven decision-making, the risks of applying tools designed for commercial contexts to social ones, and how to think critically about what data measures — and what it doesn’t.
