Essential Data Literacy

What every professional — technical or not — actually needs to understand about data in order to make better decisions, ask better questions, and hold data-driven claims to a higher standard.

Delivered at the Demystifying Data Science Conference, 2019. Data literacy is not about learning to code — it’s about understanding what data can and can’t tell you. This talk covered the core concepts every professional needs: how data is collected and what that means for what it measures, the difference between correlation and causation, how to read a chart without being misled by it, and how to ask the right questions of the people building models on your behalf.
